Memoir Writing Prompt: What was your first paying job?

Babysitting was my first paying job at 25¢ an hour. At fifteen, I gave up my sister’s bridal shower for the opportunity to make a whopping $1.50. I babysat for a single mom, a nurse, with six kids for, yes, 25¢ an hour. She worked until 2:00 a.m. and I was expected to make dinner, do the laundry, bathe the 3-year-old twins, help the older ones with homework, and get them all to bed by 8:30. When Mom came to pick me up, I counted my money all the way home: all $2.50. When I turned 16, I could work as waitress at our neighbor’s dairy bar, 10 miles away. The owners taught me all about customer service and giving a good honest effort in return for the $1.00/hour plus tips. But there, it wasn’t as much about the money, as it was the people: those I worked for and those I served.

Memoir Writing Prompt: What was your first job? How much did you earn an hour? Did you enjoy it? What did you learn from that job?

Today’s Writing Prompt: Overall, what has been your favorite job? What important lesson have you learned over the years that you would like your children or grandchildren to learn?
Enjoy writing for your generations to come.
