Memoir Writing Prompt: What Material Item do You Hold Dear as a Family Treasure?

In two months, Mom will be 97 years old. In 1928, her third grade teacher gave her this glass basket vase. Throughout my growing up, the vase held pansies, daisies, violets, and dandelions on a regular basis. When Mom sold our Pennsylvania farm, the vase was one thing Mom could not sell at the estate sale. Not because no one wanted to purchase it, but because it held so many memories for her.

I now have this vase in my home. However, I don’t use it unless Mom comes to visit—I’m afraid I’ll break it. And yet, Mom used it often and enjoyed displaying the flowers she grew around the house, as well as the field delights that we children picked and brought to her. I think I’ll take Mom’s attitude and use this keepsake more often for others to enjoy, as well as for my own pleasure.

Memoir Writing Prompt: What material family treasure do you possess? Is it displayed for others to see? Do you use it often? Describe your keepsake and tell what memories this piece holds for you.

Today’s Writing Prompt: Do you have an item from your adult life that you think your children will treasure? Describe it here and tell why your children might want to keep this.

Have fun writing for your generations to come.
