Memoir Writing Prompt: This Day is for YOU!

I recently discovered the listing of all the national holidays. And today is meant just for you. Today is “National Write Your Story Day.” I love encouraging people to write down their stories for their children and those who come after. My father’s family has always been such a mystery for me. I know they came from Russia around 1900 and that my father spent many years in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum in Manhattan after his mother died. How I wish I had known my Jewish grandparents and my nine aunts and uncles. The rich stories they could have told are lost forever. That’s why it’s so important to start writing your stories down right now. You may not have the fame and glory of Barbara Bush, Michelle Obama or Ronald Reagan, but your legacy is more important to your loved ones than those of any famous person.

Memoir Writing Prompt: It’s easy to start. Number your paper from 1 to 50. On each line, write one short phrase of a memory of yours. For example, for me, my list might go like this: 1. Lost in New York City; 2. Barn fire; 3. Halloween scare; 4. Ice storm 1960, etc. By the time you are done, you will have 50 unique prompts for stories all your own.

Today’s Writing Prompt: What’s happening in your world TODAY? Are you visiting a granddaughter in Austin, Texas, or are you excited about planning your spring garden? You may not think it’s of any importance to anyone, but you’re wrong. My mom is 97 years old and, lately, we’ve been reading her 1936 diary together. What a joy it is to find that life is in the mundane workings of day-to-day living. Pick up that pen or pencil or fire up your computer. Whatever mode of writing…

Enjoy writing for your generations to come.
