Memoir Writing Prompt: How did you celebrate Valentine’s Day as a child?
To make the prettiest valentine box ever seemed to be my goal every year in grade school. Using colored tissue paper, construction paper, and, sometimes, newspaper gave me so much material for my creative mind. I folded red construction paper and cut out hearts to paste on the box. However, it never failed that by the time I had carried my perfect creation through the snow to the bus and from the bus to the classroom, the tissue and newspaper had ripped and red dye stained my hands. But that was okay with me. Giving and receiving my homemade valentine cards trumped any decorating guffaws. And we were never told we had to give a valentine to every student; we just did. Our Valentine’s Day parties included lots of homemade cookies and candy provided by the students’ moms. Coming off Groundhog’s Day on the second made February a very happy month for me.
