December 29 The Fantasy and the Reality
“I, Jesus …I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.” Revelation 22:16- 17 (NIV)
Not allowed to celebrate Christmas as a child, I embraced the season fully as an adult. Watching It’s a Wonderful Life, singing White Christmas and even Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer makes me happy.
I probably have more Santa decorations than nativities around my house. Santa represents the fantasy of Christmas along with candy canes, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, crisp cold starlit nights warmed with hot cider. Santa is someone I get to play with one month out of the year. I love it when he comes to visit.
But, do I love Santa more than Jesus? NO! Emphatically, NO!
Jesus is more than a Christmas decoration or a whimsy: He is the reality. He gives the gift of abundant, eternal life. With Christ as my Savior, Christmas develops as an on-going relationship. Jesus doesn’t make an appearance once a year for a few weeks; He lives in me and with me every single day.
He is so much better than Santa Claus!
Thank You, Lord, that You never leave us or forsake us.
