December 12: Blended Family

Growing up, celebrations in the homes of our multiple sets of grandparents made Christmas special. Christmas Eve began with a candlelight service, complete with a visit from Santa who brought bags of fruit, nuts, candy and a toy for each child. Our next stop was the home of my father’s mother and her husband, Gladys and John. One year she gave me my first Bible; John always gave us a silver dollar. We felt rich. On to the second home, Grandma Grace and Grandpa Pete, my mother’s mother and her husband. She made us wait until after midnight, officially Christmas, before opening any gifts – not easy for us kids.

Finally back home, full of sugar-charged excitement, we went to bed. The year I was four (and still believed in Santa), I got up to kiss my parents goodnight. When I caught them bringing out the presents, I told my siblings. We were so happy we didn’t have to wait until morning to have our Christmas.

Christmas night we visited my father’s father, Grandpa Carl, and his wife Grandma Florence. Their gifts were simple and practical, but always thoughtful. As I reflect back to my early childhood, I am so thankful for the foundation of love I received in my blended family.

Lord, help us to treasure being a part of Your family, being content in all things.
