Memoir Prompt: Are You Living Life in the Positive Lane?

Memoir Prompt: I received a phone call yesterday morning from the nursing home to say my ninety-six-year-old mom had tried to get out of bed by herself in the night and fell. Vitals were taken and Mom told them she was fine. I had to see for myself.

When I reached Mom’s room, I said, “Mom, you know you can’t get out of bed by yourself. Do you hurt anywhere?”

She smiled and said, “I don’t know why everyone makes such a fuss. My back will heal; it’s not that bad.”

I decided to set her hair because having her hair done always makes her feel better. After I wet her hair and set it on her pink rollers, I wheeled her to the beauty shop to use the hair dryer. Another lady was having her nails done. She took one look in the mirror and said, “I have such terrible wrinkles.” Mom smiled but said nothing.

After her hair was dry, Mom and I returned to her room where I combed out her hair. When done, I turned her to look in the mirror. Mom’s remark, “Oh, Judy,” you always do such a beautiful job on my hair.”

Why does one person look at the negative while another chooses to see the positive? Mom has good eyesight; she knows she has wrinkles. However, living life in the positive mode has brought Mom a contented, happy life.

Memoir Prompt: List ten positives in your past life. Beside each one, tell why you consider it a positive.

Today’s Prompt: Even though there may have been some rough spots, tell about five positives of this day.
