December 5: Angels, Shepherds, and Mary

32-jesus-starFor we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
Ephesians 2:10 (NASB)

Casting announcements for the children’s Christmas pageant were posted! Young aspiring actors looked for their names to depict the story of Jesus’s birth.

The town buzzed with anticipation, or perhaps that was just my perception. You see, I was seven years old, and this was the most exciting day of my year. Who will be awarded the coveted roles of Mary and Joseph? How many angels will be chosen to “Hark” the arrival of the newborn King? Will this be the year a real, newborn baby will arrive in time to be given the honored role of baby Jesus? As for me, I longed to play Mary, mother of Jesus! However, I towered over the boy chosen to play Joseph, so I was cast as a shepherd instead.

Life is like that. As we wait for Christ’s return, we desire the coveted roles, and seek the world’s applause. But the truth is, Christ determined our roles beforehand, and He equips us to perform grandly where He places us. The great Scriptwriter is coming back, and it is His applause that matters.

Father, help me be content in the role I am given and to delight in fulfilling Your good pleasure until You come again. In Jesus name, AMEN.
